As a small business owner, you wear many hats. You’re responsible for the day-to-day operations, sales, customer service, and more. One area that many small business owners need help with is digital marketing. It can be challenging to budget for, time-consuming, and requires specific skills and knowledge.

One of the greatest difficulties small business owners face in digital marketing is budget constraints. Marketing can be expensive, and for small businesses, every dollar counts. Hiring a digital marketing agency can be cost-prohibitive for many small businesses, leaving them to try and do it independently. Creating and executing a successful digital marketing campaign can be challenging without the proper budget, knowledge, and time. Leaving small business owners in between a rock and a hard spot.

Another challenge small business owners face is time constraints. Running a small business is time-consuming, and adding digital marketing to the mix can feel overwhelming. Letting it fall by the wayside is easy, but there are better strategies than that. Digital marketing requires consistency and attention and will only be effective if it’s a priority. That is why small businesses should include digital marketing in their budget. I have personally been told by business owners that they are capable of managing their social media marketing because it is easy. However, they need to learn the full measure of what it entails before they make such a bold claim.

In addition to budget and time constraints, small business owners often need more skills and knowledge to execute a digital marketing campaign effectively. Digital marketing is constantly evolving, and it takes time to keep up with the latest trends and best practices. Even if small business owners have the time and budget to devote to digital marketing, their efforts may only be successful with the proper skills and knowledge. SEO, SEM, SERPs, CRO, CTR, PPC, Google Ads, Facebook Ads, Keywords Search, Graphic Design, Hashtags, Data Analytics, and, believe it or not, so much more.

So, what can small business owners do to overcome these difficulties and successfully execute a digital marketing campaign? First and foremost, it’s essential to set realistic goals and budgets. Understand that a successful digital marketing campaign takes time and money, and plan accordingly. It’s also important to remember that even a small budget can go a long way if used strategically. Next, prioritize digital marketing and make it a regular part of your business operations. Consistency is critical, and even a tiny amount of effort regularly can make a big difference. The old saying “you get what you pay for” applies to digital marketing, so remember that you will only get back what you put in.

Also, consider investing in the necessary skills and knowledge. Plenty of resources, such as online courses, webinars, and books, can help small business owners learn the basics of digital marketing. Which is a good foundation for getting things started. Social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram offer free tutorials and resources for businesses. Google even provides a 6-month course for Digital Marketing and E-Commerce Management. If you don’t have 6 months, check out Skill Share or Udemy for shorter courses that offer a decent education.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Plenty of digital marketing experts offer affordable services to small businesses. This depends on what you consider reasonable, but you can expect to pay somewhere between $1000-$6000 per month depending on the services provided. The price is affected by industry type, project complexity, location, and the marketing company’s size. Even if you can’t afford to hire someone full-time, consider working with a consultant or freelancer on a project basis. Freelancers can offer lower costs due to their limited overhead, making them a more reasonable option than larger marketing agencies.

In conclusion, digital marketing can be a daunting task for small business owners. Still, small business owners can successfully execute a digital marketing campaign with realistic goals, budget, prioritizing, consistency, investing in the necessary skills and knowledge, and not being afraid to ask for help. Remember that you will spend a lot of time learning and practicing a new skill while running your business. It is always more productive to hire a professional; it’s like I have said before, “Your job is to make the best damn cup of coffee. My job is to make sure everyone knows about it.”

Happy Marketing!
